Questions about your Croatian documents
What is a Domovnica, and why do I need one?
Once citizenship has been granted and the registration in the Croatian Register of Citizens is complete, an official Croatian citizenship certificate known as a Domovnica can be issued.
The Domovnica serves as formal proof of Croatian citizenship and can be used for future Croatian administrative procedures, including processes connected with civil registration and identity documents.
For clients living abroad, Salona Consulting can help coordinate the vital records registration in Croatia and obtain the resulting records where the procedure allows.
How long does it take to register vital records in Croatia?
The time required to register vital records in Croatia depends on the type of event being registered, the completeness of your documentation and the requirements of the relevant Croatian authorities.
Straightforward registrations can often be completed within a few weeks once all the necessary documents are ready. More complex cases, particularly those involving foreign records, missing documentation or discrepancies between records, may take longer.
Salona begins by reviewing your circumstances and identifying the documentation required. We then help prepare and manage the registration process in Croatia, keeping you informed of progress and any additional requirements along the way.
When can I apply for a Croatian passport and ID card after becoming a Croatian citizen?
Croatian citizenship takes effect when the positive decision is delivered to you. Your details are then entered into the Register of Croatian Citizens, a process that may take several months depending on the authorities’ internal procedures.
Before applying for a Croatian passport or identity card, we recommend confirming that your citizenship registration is complete and that all relevant Croatian civil records have been registered and are available for use.
Do I need to apply for a Croatian passport or ID card in person?
Yes. Croatian passport and ID card applications generally require you to attend an appointment in person, as your identity and biometric information need to be verified.
Croatian passports can be applied for at the relevant authorities in Croatia or, in many cases, through a Croatian embassy or consulate abroad. Croatian national ID cards must be applied for in Croatia.
We can help you prepare the necessary documentation, guide you through the requirements and coordinate the process to make your visit as straightforward as possible. If you are applying for your Croatian passport and ID directly in Croatia, our team member can accompany you in person during the application process.
Can I apply for a Croatian passport and ID card at the same time?
Yes. If you’re already a Croatian citizen, you can generally apply for both a Croatian passport and national ID card during the same visit to Croatia, provided you have the required documentation and arrange the appropriate appointments.
Both applications must be submitted in person, and processing times may differ. While Croatian passports can also be applied for through certain Croatian embassies and consulates abroad, national ID cards must be applied for in Croatia.
Salona can help you prepare the necessary documentation and coordinate your applications, making it easier to obtain both documents during a planned visit to Croatia.
How quickly can a passport be issued in Croatia?
For applications made in Croatia, a passport issued through the regular procedure has an official processing period of up to 30 days. Urgent passports can be issued within 48 hours in Zagreb or within three working days through other police administrations.
Croatian ID cards have three processing options: up to 30 days through the regular procedure, 10 days through the accelerated procedure, or three working days through the urgent procedure. Timelines for passport applications submitted through embassies or consulates abroad can differ.
What if my Croatian records do not match my current foreign documents?
Differences between Croatian and foreign records are something that can usually be reviewed and addressed. A name change, marriage, divorce, or another life event abroad may need to be reflected in the Croatian records.
Salona Consulting can compare the documents, identify what needs to be updated, and help bring the records into alignment.
